The Diagnosis of Loveby Maggie Leffler
Synopses & Reviews
This charming and accomplished novel chronicles a young doctors journey to heal her own heart-in a tale that will resonate with every woman who has ever tried to make a new start.
Dr. Holly Campbell is trying to outrun the symptoms of her life: her grief over her mothers recent death, her chronic missteps at love, and, most of all, the doubts shes had about her career since she started resenting her patients for being sick. So answering an ad for a residency program in rural England seems like the perfect escape.
By leaving home, Holly is following in her mothers footsteps. But while her mother fled to medical school on Grenada, Holly has come to an odd little English hospital-where fate intervenes. For Holly no sooner learns that practicing medicine in England is like driving on the wrong side of the road than her twin brothers runaway fiancée shows up on her doorstep, her grade-school crush turns up in her dormitory, and her mothers old lover appears at lunch. How can Holly cure their ailments if she cant even diagnose her own? Filled with the heartbreaking and healing powers of love, The Diagnosis of Love is the witty, warm, perceptive tale of a young doctor colliding with the past-and choosing her own future.
"A young doctor learns the true meaning of 'physician, heal thyself' in Leffler's inspiring debut. Dr. Holly Campbell and her twin, Ben, attend a psychic's TV show in the hopes of achieving some closure after their mother's death. Her mother-via the medium-tells them someone's moving to England and congratulates Ben on his engagement. After Ben confesses his recent engagement to Alecia, a TV journalist, Holly impulsively decides to leave her Pittsburgh residency and her new boyfriend, Dr. Matthew Hollembee, to be a 'travel doc' in Winchester, England. There she must deal with childhood abandonment issues stemming from her mother's affair with a medical student in Grenada as well as sort out her feelings for Matthew and a cute English orderly she meets. Life becomes even more problematic after a frustrated Alecia arrives, needing help with other family challenges. Eventually, Holly discovers love can be a choice. Leffler, a practicing physician, infuses Holly's spiritual search with liberal doses of humor, exquisite insight and rich details about the U.K. medical profession."
