"No one ever began 'Caleb Williams' that did not read it through. No one that ever read it could possibly forget it."-William Hazlitt William Godwin was married to pioneering feminist Mary Wolsstonecraft, who wrote "A Vindication of the Rights of Women," and the father of "Frankenstein" author Mary Shelley. A novelist and political radical, he influenced Shelley and the Romantics, Dickens, and American Romantic authors like Hawthorne and Poe. His most famous novel combines the Gothic thriller with the political novel, spinning a tale that is both suspenseful and a statement about freedom, liberty, wealth, and power. If you read one 18th century novel this year, make it this one.
