Publisher Comments:

This Norton Critical Edition of Stephen Crane's classic 1895 Civil War novel is again based on the first published edition, conservatively edited. The Fourth Edition offers a broadened and restructured "Backgrounds and Sources" section that illuminates the social and intellectual climate of the 1890s and includes thought-provoking material by Jay Martin, Charles J. LaRocca, and Perry Lentz on Crane's use of the Battle of Chancellorsville.

"Criticism" includes an expanded introduction by Donald Pizer covering major critical approaches to the novel and fourteen assessments that reflect the revival critical interest in The Red Badge of Courage by, among others, R. W. Stallman, Charles C. Walcutt, John Fraser, Amy Kaplan, John E. Curran Jr., James B. Colvert, and Donald Pizer.

About the Series: No other series of classic texts equals the caliber of the Norton Critical Editions. Each volume combines the most authoritative text available with the comprehensive pedagogical apparatus necessary to appreciate the work fully. Careful editing, first-rate translation, and thorough explanatory annotations allow each text to meet the highest literary standards while remaining accessible to students. This novel is the bright model that Stephen Crane creates for the 19th century readers to depict through irony the only way for American youth, including poor people of the countryside who are mostly farmers, to reach dignity and some respect: to be part of the American Civil War. Although Stephen Crane uses characters who lack of skill in the affair of war they are incited to fight because of anger and courage, mostly caused by the severe language of their lieutenant calling them (usiong the proper word)a waste of time.
