Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

"The Struggle for Nature" outlines and examines the main aspects of current environmental philosophy including deep ecology, social and political ecology, eco-feminism and eco-anarchism. It criticizes the dependency on science of these philosophies and the social problems engendered by them. Jozef Keulartz argues for a post-naturalistic turn in environmental philosophy. "The Struggle for Nature" presents the most up-to-date arguments in environmental philosophy, which will be valuable reading for anyone interested in applied philosophy, environmental studies or geography.

Book News Annotation:

First published in Dutch (1995), Keulartz (applied philosophy, Wageningen Agricultural U.) charts what he views as the scientific and social pitfalls of current environmental philosophies. Keulartz believes that radical ecology threatens communication and comes in four forms: Arnie Naess's deep ecology, Murray Bookchin's social ecology, Ivan Illich's political ecology, and ecofeminism. Keulartz aims to improve environmental philosophies from two complementary angles: first, he uses Foucault's and Donzelot's work on power to show how environmental philosophy should create a strengthening of "bio- power"; second, Keulartz shows how Habermas's and Lyotard's philosophies of language can help overturn what Keulartz considers to be environmentalism's tendency to threaten communication and competing points of view.
