Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This book examines and confronts the passive and often unconscious racism of White teacher education students, offering a critical tool in the effort to make education more equitable. Sherry Marx provides a consciousness-raising account of how White teachers must come to recognize their own positions of privilege and work actively to create anti-racist teaching techniques and learning environments for children of color and children learning English as a Second Language.

Book News Annotation:

Marx (secondary education, Utah State U.) presents a microanalysis of racism and White privilege among a group of White preservice teachers as they tutor children of color in predominantly Latina/o schools in the Southwest. Using transcribed, in-depth dialogues with nine White, female tutors, the author examines the process of their unfolding racial identity and emerging consciousness of their position as White teachers vis a vis students of color they tutor. She argues in favor of teacher education that directly teaches about racism and White privilege in ways that problematize both beliefs teachers hold about racial others and the idealistic images they construct of themselves, and offers several useful recommendations for addressing issues of Whiteness and racism in university curricula and field experiences.
