Publisher Comments:

Andromeda McKee rebuilt her life in the violent embrace of the Legion of the Damned in the days when cyborgs were first being introduced. Now she must choose between her conscience and her desire for vengeance...

In a different world, Lady Catherine “Cat” Carletto would never have left her pampered life behind. But when Princess Ophelia became Empress Ophelia in a coup that claimed the lives of the princesss brother and all who supported him, including the Carletto family, Cat had to hide—or die.

She became Legionnaire Andromeda McKee, and now shes a battle-scarred veteran who knows how to kill.

Summoned to Earth to receive the Imperial Order of Merit from the empress herself, Andromeda learns that she isnt the sole surviving Carletto—her uncle Rex is not only still alive but also the leader of a resistance group determined to overthrow Ophelia.

Caught up in a web of intrigue, Andromeda realizes that the moment is coming when her revenge will be at hand. But will she be able to act, or will she be betrayed by those she has come to trust?

Synopsis:

Wardhaven marine Kris Longknife has a lot to prove in the struggle between Earth and hundreds of warring colonies. But after an ill-conceived attack, Kris must choose between certain death or mutiny. Original.

I ran across _Kris Longknife, Daring_ a while back, and snapped a picture of the cover with my phone to remind myself to see if I could find the earlier books in the series. I was somewhat surprised that I hadn't heard of Mike Shepherd or the books until last year, as I'm a long-time fan of science fiction, with an emphasis on military SF. Two days ago, I found myself killing time in a Barnes & Noble, and picked up a copy of _Kris Longknife, Mutineer_; they had the whole set, but since I'd not read anything of his previously, I decided to take the safe route and just grab the first in case it was a stinker (I have been burned before, and I don't have a lot of cash to spend on books these days).

It wasn't a stinker.

*chuckles* I could leave it at that, I suppose, but that wouldn't be fair. Funny, but not fair.

I was hooked in the first ten pages. For a guy who writes that he flunked out of boot camp, Mike Shepherd has written one of the best pieces of military SF that I've ever read. I'm a combat vet (First Gulf War), and he managed to write something that sent chills down my spine and put tears in my eyes in more than a few places. Emma Rutherford's blessing to Kris Longknife at the Dining In did both at the same time, and threatens to get something in my eye just now as I flip through the pages to get the names right. That bit alone is quite likely to be the finest piece of writing I have ever seen written to describe the meaning of honour and what it means to be a proud member of the military. I will recommend this book to anyone who'll listen, and should I ever have the chance to meet him in person, I will gladly purchase a beverage of his choice, if not a succession of them.

And while I've already said I don't have a lot of money to spend on books these days, I've already ordered the rest of the series from Powell's. I look forward to seeing them arrive on my doorstep.
