Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Possibly the best student of hypocrisy since Voltaire

This portrait of a golden-tongued evangelist-who lives a life of hypocrisy, sensuality, and self-indulgence-is also the chronicle of a reign of vulgarity, which but for Lewis would have left no record of itself.

Synopsis:

The portrait of an evangelist who rises to power within his church.

I just watched the Burt Lancaster film (he won an Oscar for playing the title character) and decided to pick this up. Lewis isn't read much anymore, but he was the first American to win the Nobel Prize. He also won a Pulitzer, which he turned down. Many of his books are "social" or satiric novels and as such, have date somewhat. He writes in a plainspoken, realistic style and while religious hypocrisy and hysteria is a worthy target, I'm not sure he goes far enough, even though this generated controversy when it came out. Also check out "Babbitt" and "Arrowsmith."
