Engineering and Technology 1650-1750: Illustrations and Texts from Original Sources (Dover Science Books) Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Highly readable text features more than 200 engravings that encompass engineering projects dealing with surveying, leveling, materials, hand tools, lifting equipment, transport and erection, piling, bailing, water supply, hydraulic engineering, and more. Specific projects include transporting a 50-ton stone to the Louvre, erecting an obelisk, building timber locks, and dredging canals.

Book News Annotation:

Jensen drew mostly on the writings of Jacob Leupold (1697-1761) and Bernard Forest de B<'e>lidor (1641-1727) for his Civil Engineering Around 1700, published in 1969 by Danish Technical Press, Copenhagen. In line drawings and text excerpts, he reveals to modern engineers the roots of their craft as it accelerated toward what we now know as the Industrial Revolution. Most of the illustrations are full size or reduced only slightly. The arrangement is by task, such as lifting equipment, water supply, and roads and streets. There is no index.
