Mysticism and Logic

Mysticism and Logic Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

10 brilliant essays by a Nobel Prize-winning philosopher challenge romantic mysticism and promote a scientific view of society and nature. Russell explains his theory of logical atomism in these witty, cogent writings, which include popular treatments of religious and educational issues as well as more technical examinations of problems of logic.

Book News Annotation:

Russell's ten essays, most of which he described as popular rather than technical, assert that mysticism is a superannuated relic of the nineteenth century, and that belief instead in logical atomism is the best means to a satisfying and balanced conception of the universe. He argues for the scientific method as the sole basis for evaluating peoples' relationships with their society and their environment, just as it should be the only means of evaluating the nonhuman world. The essays here include "A Free Man's Worship" and "On the Notion of Cause." This is a reprint of the Longmans, Green and Co. edition published in 1918. It is cited in Books for College Libraries, 3d ed.
