About the Author

Doug Newsom, Emeritus, professor of journalism at Texas Christian University, is the senior coauthor of THIS IS PR and PUBLIC RELATIONS WRITING, 9E. She also is the coauthor of three other books and the author of two more. She serves as a member of the Commission on Public Relations Education, is a former chair of PRSA's College of Fellows, and is a past chair of the Accrediting Committee for the Accrediting Council on Education for Journalism and Mass Communications. She has been president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication, Texas Public Relations Association, and the Dallas and Fort Worth chapters of PRSA. Dr. Newsom has been national faculty advisor to PRSSA. She has been head of the PR Division of AEJMC and served as chair of its former PR division heads. Awards include the Institute for Public Relations' Pathfinder, PRSA Outstanding Educator, Public Relations Foundation of Texas's Educator of the Year Award, Texas Public Relations Association's Golden Spur, and Association of Women in Communications Headliner. She has served Fulbrights in India and Singapore; presented workshops in South Africa, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, and Vanuatu; and taught in Latvia and England. She has been chair of the Fulbright discipline committee, served 18 years on a gas research institute's advisory council, and was one of the first women elected to the board of a publicly held company where she served 24 years until reaching mandatory retirement age.Judy VanSlyke Turk, a professor of public relations and the director of the School of Mass Communications at Virginia Commonwealth University, was founding dean of the College of Communication and Media Sciences at Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates. Prior to that, she was dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina and was director of the journalism and mass communication program at Kent State University. Dr. VanSlyke Turk is the 2008?2009 president of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication and is a past president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She has represented both organizations on the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Dr. VanSlyke Turk is a member of the Commission on Public Relations Education and has been chair or cochair of the Educational Affairs Committee of the Public Relations Society of America since 2007. She is a past chair of PRSA's College of Fellows and a PRSA outstanding educator. She and coauthor Dr. Doug Newsom jointly won the Pathfinder Award from the Institute for Public Relations. Dr. VanSlyke Turk is associate editor of Journalism Studies and coeditor of a collection of international public relations case studies now in its third edition. She has consulted and lectured on public relations and journalism/mass communication in Eastern Europe, Russia and the newly independent states, the Baltics, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.Dean Kruckeberg is a professor of public relations at the University of Northern Iowa. He became coauthor of THIS IS PR in its sixth edition and is coauthor with Dr. Kenneth Starck of PUBLIC RELATIONS AND COMMUNITY: A RECONSTRUCTED THEORY. Dr. Kruckeberg is a member of PRSA's College of Fellows, is a past member of PRSA's national board, and has been National Faculty Advisor of PRSSA. He is the educator cochair of the Commission on Public Relations Education, which recommends national guidelines for PR education. He is a former chair of the PR Divisions of the International Communication Association, the National Communication Association, and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, as well as PRSA's Educators Academy. He is a charter member of the Institute for Public Relations' Commission on International Public Relations and is a former cochair of PRSA's Educational Affairs Committee. Honors include PRSA's National Outstanding Educator Award, the Institute for Public Relations' Pathfinder Award, the Iowa Regents Faculty Excellence Award, the Wartburg College Alumni Citation, and NCA's first PRIDE award in the book category for his book with Dr. Starck. Dr. Kruckeberg has taught at the United Arab Emirates University and helped develop its PR curriculum. He also has taught in Latvia, Bulgaria, Sweden, and Russia. He is author and coauthor of numerous book chapters and journal articles that deal with global public relations and international PR ethics.
