Sherlock Holmes

The Complete Novels and Stories

Volume I

Since his first appearance in Beetons Christmas Annual in 1887, Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes has been one of the most beloved fictional characters ever created. Now, in two paperback volumes, Bantam presents all fifty-six short stories and four novels featuring Conan Doyles classic hero--a truly complete collection of Sherlock Holmess adventures in crime!

Volume I includes the early novel A Study in Scarlet, which introduced the eccentric genius of Sherlock Holmes to the world. This baffling murder mystery, with the cryptic word Rache written in blood, first brought Holmes together with Dr. John Watson. Next, The Sign of Four presents Holmess famous “seven percent solution” and the strange puzzle of Mary Morstan in the quintessential locked-room mystery.

Also included are Holmess feats of extraordinary detection in such famous cases as the chilling “ The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” the baffling riddle of “The Musgrave Ritual,” and the ingeniously plotted “The Five Orange Pips,” tales that bring to life a Victorian England of horse-drawn cabs, fogs, and the famous lodgings at 221B Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes earned his undisputed reputation as the greatest fictional detective of all time.

A collection of complete novels and stories including A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four. This volume represents his early works.

I have and always will love the great Sherlock Holmes. The stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are some of my favorite detective stories of all time. I personally believe that there is no bad version of Sherlock Holmes; while I prefer to read the books and watch either the Robert Downey Jr. or Benedict Cumberbatch versions, I can honestly watch or read anything to do with these brilliant characters. The coy comments that pass between Sherlock and Watson are so ingenious and the intricacies that each character develops create a wonderful world for the reader to delve into. Also, it is nice that these stories can be read individually or as a complete collection. Honestly, everyone needs to read some, if not all, Sherlock Holmes stories in their lifetime.

"I'll admit my interest was first piqued by the 2009 depiction of Holmes and Watson by Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, but wow, these stories are entertaining. I love Holmes; for me there has rarely been a character I have found so beloved or identified with so readily (though it was more for his odd habits than his insightful observations). Each story in this volume follows a pretty standard formula of getting the case, investigating, and then solving (most of the time) but for some reason, it rarely got old. Each story seemed exciting and drew me in time and again, despite any minute similarities to others.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may have seen this as some of his lowliest writing, but I for one, am glad he brought oddball Sherlock Holmes into the world so people like me could follow along with his cases just as Watson did.
