"The Clan of the Cave Bear" is a gripping story full of interesting factual tidbits and characters worth caring about. It creates a prehistoric world of such detail that you will remember it long after you finish reading. However the writing can be a bit poor at times, and some of the sexual and violent content seems unnecessarily graphic for the story, detracting from what is otherwise a very enjoyable read.

I read this book the first time in the 80's. Waited impatiently for the follow up book, then again and again. There are five books in the Earth Children Series so far and I'm always hoping for another. I have read these books at least twice and I see the third coming. You open The Clan of the Cave Bear and enter the world of our making. You join a girl child, alone, and she carries you with her through four more books, as she grows up. You learn, in a way better way than school teaches, how our tools, weapons, clothes, food, seasonings and medicines came about. How they were improved over time. Relationships, prejudices, love, hate and amazing scenery. All of which is based on actual history and studies of the ice age on earth. These books live within me and have helped me in actual life. Just be prepared to want the whole series and have the next book waiting after the last page of the previous.
