I just finished reading this book for the third time, and it's still a page-turner for me! I love the social commentary; as the story unfolds we see how the upper class's superior and separatist attitudes actually keep them enslaved. A great blending of realism with just enough fantasy to pique my imagination.

I decided to read Grass after reading the brief intro to the book...the combination of plague and aristocracy in a foreign land intrigued me a bit, but also because the planet was called "Grass" and the impression of an eerie dystopian monoculture. After the first 100 or so pages the storyline really picks up and a multitude of interesting character and anthropological elements are added to the plot. The prose is compelling and shows excellent use of metaphor and juxtaposition. I appreciated that the story wasn't dominated with anthropomorphic aliens but maintained a very humanistic quality. Recommended!
