Publisher Comments:

When 30-year-old Indigo Rosemartin leaves her young daughter and her homeland of Jamaia behind to pursue the American Dream, she has no way of foreseeing just how final her goodbye will be. Just as she's adjusting to her new residence in Chicago, and to her position as housekeeper for a well-off but troubled family, her world collapses with the arrival of devastating news from home. But when the anesthetic of gambling fails to numb her pain, Indigo begins to realize that only by facing her despair will she ever reclaim her life. With mesmerizing prose, a cast of vibrant secondary characters that includes Indigo's fun-loving neighbor, Jewell; the Silver daughters, her three feisty but needy adolescent charges; and gentle old Abraham Borotsky, a concentration camp survivor and the neighborhood blackjack champion, and an unforgettable heroine, Indigo Rose heralds the debut of a luminous new talent in contemporary fiction.
