Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Focusing on the central figures of his life--his four wives, his books, and his muse, Dementia--the book leads us to suspect that the fictions Vadim has created as an author have crossed the line between his life's work and his life itself, as the worlds of reality and literary invention grow increasingly indistinguishable.

"Stop moping!" she would cry: "Look at the harlequins!"
"What harlequins? Where?"
"Oh, everywhere. All around you. . .Come on! Play! Invent the world! Invent reality!"
One of the great prose stylists of the 20th century, Nabokov wrote his first novels in Russian before switching to English for his most famous works. This, his final novel from 1974, finds his imaginative power and stylistic inventiveness undiminished. A book about an author, who has many similarities with Nabokov, this has a playful feel and nesting box structure that recalls his earlier "Pale Fire."
