Publisher Comments:

You may be surprised

at the tricky music

a box,

a snowflake,

some raindrops,

and a kitten

can make.

Right before your eyes.

And on the pages

of this book.

There is someone

backstage

watching, encouraging

our performers

but keeping them

under control.

Why not

listen along?

John Coltrane's classic song "Giant Steps" is performed by raindrops, a snowflake, a box, and a kitten. This ingenious tribute to one master (jazz saxophonist John Coltrane) by another (author and illustrator Raschka) is a deft lesson about music and art. Full-color illustrations.

Synopsis:

An ingenious tribute to one master from another. Imagine John Coltrane's classic "Giant Steps" performed by raindrops, a snowflake, a box, and a kitten, respectively the tempo, the bass, the piano, and the saxophone melody. Full color.

About the Author

Chris Raschka has written and illustrated several picture books, among them two others inspired by jazz masters, Charlie Parker Played Be Bop and Mysterious Thelonious (a New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book). His Yo!Yes? is a Caldecott Honor Book, and Waffle, his most recent, has been praised aptly by Publishers Weekly in a starred review for "Once again [capturing] the essence of a mood with the merest of texts and the briefest of brush strokes."

Mr. Raschka, a musician himself, lives with his wife and son in New York City.
