Publisher Comments:

Jeff Greene was only seven when Melody, his mother, left him with his reserved, undemonstrative father, the Professor. So when she reenters his life years later with an invitation to spend the summer with her in Charleston, Jeff is captivated by her free spirit and warmth, and he eagerly looks forward to returning for another visit the following year.

But Jeff's second summer in Charleston ends with a devastating betrayal, and he returns to his father wounded almost beyond bearing. But out of Jeff's pain grows a deepening awareness of the unexpected and complicated ways of love and loss and of family and friendship — and the strength to understand his father, his mother, and especially himself.

A Solitary Blue
In A Solitary Blue, a boy named Jeff is abandoned by his mother at the age of seven. He is left with his dad, who at the time didn’t act like much of a father. He misses his mom greatly, and wishes she would come back.
After Jeff’s mom leaves, he is left under the care of his father. His dad hires people from the school he works at to watch Jeff. Jeff had to be independent at this time, because his dad dint do anything but sit in his office and work. Jeff made dinner, did chores, and rarely ever gets the chance to talk to his dad. The relationship between him and his father could be considered bad. He calls him professor instead of dad. As for school, he is doing well at this point.
A couple of years pass, and Jeff hasn’t heard from his mom, but out of nowhere, she invites him to stay with her for the summer. His father approves as he does, and so he went to his mother’s house for the summer. He was extremely excited, and had a great time.
He returns home, and goes back to what he normally does. The only thing that really changed was his relationship with his dad. It got much better, and they are acting more like father and son.
The next summer he visits his mom again. This time, he doesn’t enjoy it as much as last time.
He goes home, to his father once again, there relationship booming at this point, and they move to a little house near a river. Jeff makes new friends, and is growing into a young man. His mom visits a couple of times, but their relationship is basically down the toilet. By the end of the book, Jeff is graduating High School, and is more mature than his mother and a great person.
I wasn’t very fond of this book because it was very slow, and had a lot of detail about things that weren’t very significant. As for the theme, I think he learned that sometimes people aren’t what you think they are, and that you have to be more mature than others at some points. –Shayna White
