Publisher Comments:

Disease Handbook for Massage Therapists is a quick reference for practicing massage therapists who need to make on-the-spot decisions on the applicability of their work when pathologies are present. The information included falls under five major topics:

  • A brief definition and description of the condition. Associated conditions and diseases are indicated with bold font to direct readers to the appropriate other entries.
  • A list of signs and symptoms
  • A description of common treatment options, with emphasis on those that might influence choices about massage
  • A list of types of medications that are often recommended to treat the condition; this issue can be further pursued in Drug Handbook for Massage Therapists
  • A discussion of massage considerations, including possible risks, benefits, and advice for practitioners

Conditions are listed in alphabetical order, and cross-references for subtypes are found throughout the text.

A companion Website will offer the searchable full text online.

I have found this book to be very useful for a quick/direct understanding of many commonly seen disease. I used this book a lot in my pathology class (very useful for studying) and I find myself continuing to use this book with my clients for a quick reminder of precautions. This book is great for all LMT's and LMT students to have on there shelf. Ruth Werner did a very good job at making this book as user friendly as possible. All the conditions are listed in alphabetical order, and some can be cross-referenced. This makes for quick and easy accesses of information. She gives the following information for each condition . . .

#1. Definition and Description
#2. Signs and Symptoms
#3. Common Treatments
#4. Medications (they may be using)
#5. Considerations, Risks, Benefits, and Advice

This book was something that made me feel a little more confident and comfortable working with conditions that I had no first hand experience with.
