Publisher Comments:

"Crazy Jack" is a retelling of a favorite fairy tale, "Jack and the Beanstalk." Jack is only nine years old when his father disappears after climbing a cliff in search of a pot of gold. Seven years later, Jack trades the family cow for magic beans at the market. Then he plants the magic beans at the base of the cliff grow, so he can search for his father. The cannibalistic, wife beating giant chanting "Fee, fi, fo, fum" enters the story. Napoli puts a twist in the traditional story by adding a tale of romance between Jack and the cheese-making neighbor's daughter, Flora.

Synopsis:

Jack loves to work the land and make things grow. And he loves Flora, the girl next door, to whom he has been promised since childhood. But drought steals the crops and his hopes, and finally, one day, his father, who climbs the cliff and vanishes in the clouds. Jack is so tormented that people begin to call him Crazy Jack. But Jack's not mad — he's haunted and hungry. When a lucky bit of magic gives Jack the means to follow Father, he enters a world of terrifying treasure and temptation. Only Jack would be crazy enough to climb.
