I wish someone could demystify for me how it is possible to include birth, death and life- with its experiences of friendship, loyalty, joy, fear, sadness, embarassment... everything imaginable- in a volume that is seemingly finished as soon as one has begun and presented with sensitivity and humor.
It is a wonderful thing, having the spectrum of one's feelings gently validated while drinking in an entertaining story, especially one which praises nature and independent thinking, and which can be shared with a friend of almost any age. Both my three-year-old and I enjoy Charlotte's Web enough to have read it through together three times in less than one month. Not to mention going over his favorite sections multiple times.
This book was given to me in a set with two of E.B. White's others at Christmastime when I was eight and a half. I had forgotten about it until I saw it at the public library here in Sweden. I will be finding the other two and reading them again, and maybe I should just admit right now that I cried while explaining to the Swedish Librarian what a worthwhile read this is.
