About the Author

H.D. (1886-1961) (the pen name of Hilda Doolittle) was born in the Moravian community of Bethlehem, PA in 1886. A major twentieth century poet with “an ear more subtle than Pound’s, Moore’s, or Yeats’s” as Marie Ponsot writes, she was the author of several volumes of poetry, fiction, essays, and memoirs. She is perhaps one of the best-known and prolific women poets of the Modernist era. Bryher Ellerman was a novelist and H.D.’s wealthy companion. She financed H.D.’s therapy with Freud.Born in Paris in 1928, Nathaniel Tarn has lived outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, for nearly thirty years. He has published an incredible range of books as a poet,anthropologist, editor, translator, and essayist. His most recent collection of poems is Ins and Outs of the Forest Rivers.Forrest Gander grew up in Virginia and has degrees in geology and English literature.  His recent books include the novel As a Friend and the translation Firefly Under the Tongue: Selected Poems of Coral Bracho (PEN Translation Prize Finalist), both from New Directions.  A United States Artists Rockefeller Fellow, Gander is recipient of fellowships from the NEA, the Guggenheim, Howard, and Whiting foundations. He is the Adele Kellenberg Seaver Professor of Literary Arts and Comparative Literature at Brown University.Alejandra Pizarnik (1936–1972) was a key figure in twentieth-century Argentine poetry.
