Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This vibrant collection of five long tales by Nikolai Leskov — "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, " "The Enchanted Wanderer, " "The Left-Handed Craftsman, " "The Sentry, " and "The White Eagle" — explores, through dark and passionate narrative, the very essence of the human condition. Setting his tales against the backdrop of nineteenth-century working class Russia, Leskov incorporates themes of love, despair, loneliness, and ambition in these sometimes mythic, sometimes satiric, always entertaining stories. Set from the authoritative edition.
