Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

One of the most controversial and acclaimed novels ever written, The Satanic Verses is Salman Rushdies best-known and most galvanizing book. Set in a modern world filled with both mayhem and miracles, the story begins with a bang: the terrorist bombing of a London-bound jet in midflight. Two Indian actors of opposing sensibilities fall to earth, transformed into living symbols of what is angelic and evil. This is just the initial act in a magnificent odyssey that seamlessly merges the actual with the imagined. A book whose importance is eclipsed only by its quality, The Satanic Verses is a key work of our times.

Synopsis:

A hijacked jetliner explodes above the English Channel. Through the falling debris, Gibreel Farishta, the biggest star in India, and Saladin Chamcha, an expatriate, plummet from the sky, and proceed through a series of metamorphoses, dreams, and revelations.

Synopsis:

Just before dawn one winter's morning, a hijacked jetliner explodes above the English Channel. Through the falling debris, two figures, Gibreel Farishta, the biggest star in India, and Saladin Chamcha, an expatriate returning from his first visit to Bombay in fifteen years, plummet from the sky, washing up on the snow-covered sands of an English beach, and proceed through a series of metamorphoses, dreams, and revelations.

Rushdie's Satanic Verses addresses issues confronting individuals living in an increasingly global, cosmopolitan world. He shows how deeply one's historical, familial, and cultural contexts create the perspective from which one encounters others while also demonstrating how one's beliefs--as opposed to certainty--undergirds the entirety of existence.

SARA MOZDIR, September 1, 2011 (view all comments by SARA MOZDIR)
No book in modern times has matched the uproar sparked by Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses, which earned its author a death sentence. I was told, when handed the book, that it was to be treated as a comic fable that displays Good vs Evil in unbelieable situations. I read it in my early twenties, when all things "taboo" are insatiable. Orignally learning the book was banned in India before publication, I read it to be counterculture... and ended up falling in love with Rushdie's writing style. A must read, if for nothing other than to incite conversation from onlookers on the subway.
