About the Author

Gopal S. Upadhyaya is professor of powder metallurgy in the Depar1ment of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. He earned his doctorate at Kiev Institute of Technology, CIS, where he worked under C. V. Samsonov, the world's authority on refractory compounds.

Dr. Upadhyaya has received various honors such as the Honory Diploma, full membership and Samsonov Prize from the International Institute for the Science of Sintering; the Niobium Medal of the Max Planck Institute; the MRSI Medal; and the G. D. Bir1a gold metal of the Indian Institute of Metals. He was also President of the Powder Metallurgy Association of India for two terms. Dr. Upadhyaya is on the editorial board of several international and national journals related to materials science and powder metallurgy, and has authored or contributed to over 250 technical papers and eight books.
