Book News Annotation:

Russian painter Grisha Bruskin was born in Moscow in 1945, where he grew up in a Jewish family under the Stalinist and post-Stalinist state. Since emigrating to New York in 1988, his work has been exhibited at major museums throughout the world; he is currently affiliated with the Marlborough Gallery in New York. In this collection of 318 concise stories, the artist describes his experiences as a Jew in Russia, coming of age as an underground artist, emerging suddenly onto the international art scene in 1988, and traveling through the unpredictable social landscapes of Russia and the West. Previously published in Russian as volume 1 of Proshedshee vremya nesovershennogo vida (Moscow: Novoe literaturnoe obozrenie, 2001), the text is translated by Alice Nakhimovsky (Russian and Jewish studies, Colgate U.), whose introductory essay provides background on Bruskin's life and art. Illustrated with b&w and color photographs and reproductions. No subject index. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
