Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

Rosenfeld is perhaps best remembered for his "sweatshop poems" in the early American Jewish press, collected in Songs from the Ghetto (1898), to lament the conditions under which immigrants toiled. In what is presented as the first full-length study of his work from a literary rather than ideological perspective, Miller (Yiddish language, literature, and culture, Emory U.) treats Rosenfeld as a best-selling interpreter of the East European Jewish experience before Isaac B. Singer and Sholem Aleichem. The book (based on Miller's dissertation at Columbia U.) includes a chronological list of Rosenfeld's works.
