Book News Annotation:

As a "post-assimilation" student of Jewish literature in America, Bachman (English, Spalding U., Louisville, Kentucky) reads works by authors who provide "thresholds" to understanding the immigrant experience in the real/imagined "Yiddishland" of New York's Lower East Side: Abraham Cahan's novel Yekl (1896) and Anzia Yezierska's short story collection, Hungry Hearts (1920 ). She contrasts these works to modernist Yiddish poetry of the 1920s, and reads poems (many in her first-time translation) of Jews relating ambivalently to the minority experience of black Americans. The dissertation-based study includes illustrations of U.S. Jewish locations and themes. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
