Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The double-sided nature of African nationalism—its capacity to inspire expressions of unity, and its tendency to narrow political debate—are explored by sixteen historians, focusing on the experience of Tanzania. The narrative of the nation of Tanzania, which was created by the anticolonial nationalist movement, expanded by the Union after the Zanzibar Revolution, and fused by the ideology of Ujamaa by Julius Nyerere, has shaped Tanzanian political discourse for decades, but has not obliterated the great wealth of political discourses and identities which exist within the nation.

Book News Annotation:

In this collection of 17 extended articles drawn from a festschrift for Professor I.N. Kimambo, contributors show how nationalism in Africa has many facets, including those capable of inspiring expressions of unity and others tending to narrow political debate. Topics include the power of politics and knowledge in reconstructing a royal ritual and reconsidering political leadership in nineteenth-century Eastern Tanzania, politics and culture of dissent in colonial Tanganyika, including new readings of the tribal past and conflicts with overseas authority, dissent within new nations as expressed by censorship and the various fates of democracy and advocacy, and the results within post-colonial societies in terms of national identity and memory as expressed in education.
