Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Completely updated and expanded to reflect developments in the field, the second edition of this valuable reference reviews all of the fracture modes and design methodologies needed for control and prevention of structural failures in mechanical components. It begins with the historical development of the field and then provides the fundamentals, basic formulas, elementary worked examples, and references with an emphasis on linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) using a hands-on approach. The book includes case studies and design problems along with new chapters on experimental methods in fracture, fracture of composite materials, dynamic fracture, and post mortem analysis of fracture surfaces.

Book News Annotation:

In this review for design engineers, Shukla (mechanical engineering, University of Rhode Island) applies techniques in fracture mechanics to the design of mechanical components and the control and prevention of structural failures, merging fundamental concepts in fracture mechanics, materials science, and stress analysis to form a modern approach to engineering design. Early chapters provide a primer for calculation, and later chapters look at fracture modes and design methods and fracture control. This second edition contains four new chapters on fractographic analysis, the fracture of composites, dynamic fracture, and experimental methods in fracture mechanics. The first edition was published by Alexander Blake.
