Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This reference book offers in-depth coverage of pharmacological and mechanical interventions available for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction. It examines the efficacy of thrombolytic therapy by analyzing infarct artery patency, left ventricular function, mortality and complications.;The book presents therapeutic results on the use of nitrates, beta adrenergic blockers and calcium channel blockers, details antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy, describes new antiplatelet and antithrombin agents, investigates combination thrombolytic therapy and the potential of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.

Book News Annotation:

Bates (cardiology, U. of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor) and 29 colleagues comprehensively discuss thrombolytic therapy for acute myocardial infarction (120 pp.)--artery patency, mortality trials, complications. Adjunctive pharmacotherapy using nitroglycerine, aspirin, beta- and calcium blockers, heparin, Warfarin, and newer antiplatelet and antithrombin agents is covered (230 pp.) in 12 chapters. Three chapters cover angioplasty, bypass and intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation. Ends with a refreshing departure--economics. US cardiology costs are $80 billion, 11.6% of GNP--roughly double that of other industrialized countries. And this cost yields mortality-morbidity rates similar to those in Canada.
