Calderon: The Physician of His Honour, Second Edition (Hispanic Classics)by Pedro Calderon De La Barca
Synopses & Reviews
One of the most intellectually and emotionally engaging of the Spanish Golden Age (seventeenth century) plays, as well as the most controversial. Taking place during the reign of King Pedro of Castile (1350-1369), it is one of the spectacular 'honour dramas', in which the main characters confront compelling yet conflicting imperatives. The Physician of His Honour is beautiful in its poetry and unsettling in its resolution. For more than 350 years the play and its author have been as fiercely reviled as they have been enthusiastically acclaimed by audiences and readers. First published in 1997, for the second edition the translation has been extensively revised, with the aim of simplifying the English, whilst continuing to respect and acknowledge as much as possible the beauties and challenges of the original Spanish.
Book News Annotation:
Written in Spain in 1630, the play The Physician of His Honor has always been controversial. There has never been disagreement, however, about the brilliance of the playwright. Calderón was a master of the comedia, a style of three-act play written in verse during Spain's Golden Age, the 16th and 17th centuries. An introduction to the play discusses its structure and characters, its metaphors, its historical contexts and responses, and staging and setting. The introduction also examines problems in translating and editing the play. The play's side-by-side Spanish and English presentation will be useful to Spanish-language instructors wishing to discuss linguistic points. B&w photos for performances are included. In this second edition, the translation has undergone extensive revision. Translator Fox teaches Hispanic studies at Brandeis University.
