Combined cycle power plants are one of the most promising and flexible approaches to conventional, fossil-fuel and biomass-fired energy production. The combination of a gas turbine and a steam turbine working in tandem to produce power makes this type of plant highly efficient, and it can also be fuel-flexible when combined with gasification technology, with other advanced concepts are also under development.

This book provides a comprehensive and systematic review of the design, engineering and operational issues of a range of advanced combined cycle power plants. Initial chapters covers plant thermodynamics and key components, as well as the main types of combined cycle plant in operation, including natural-gas combined cycle (NGCC) and integrated-gasification combined cycle (IGCC). This coverage is extended with chapters on novel cycles - e.g. humid air turbines (HAT), externally fired combined cycle (EFCC) - as well as chapters reviewing the integration of renewable technologies - e.g. integrated solar combined cycle (ISCC) and fuel cell hybrid combined cycles. Finally, the book concludes with a review of the techno-economic evaluation of the range of combined cycle plants, with and without carbon dioxide (CO2) capture.

About the Author

Professor Ashok Rao is a Chief Scientist for Power Systems at the Advanced Power Energy Program, University of California, Irvine. He has an international reputation for his research into combined cycle technology.
