Cab driver Chet Conway was hoping for a good tip from his latest fare, the sort he could spend. But what he got was a tip on a horse race. Which might have turned out okay, except that when he went to collect his winnings Chet found his bookie lying dead on the living room floor.

I love vintage crime/noir/hardboiled novels, so I'm always happy to stumble upon a new one. Hard Case Crime has reissued this 1969 novel with a sweet, retro pulp-y cover. Westlake was a prolific writer, who wrote the Parker series under the name Richard Stark, wrote "The Hot Rock," which was filmed with Robert Redford, and did the screenplays for "The Grifters" and the cult horror film "The Stepfather."
