Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

From 1942 to 1945, William Stafford was interned in camps for conscientious objectors for his refusal to be inducted into the U.S. Army. Stafford's memoir of these years offers a rich glimpse into a little-known aspect of World War II and a fascinating look at the formative years of a major American poet.

I read this book last summer and it is interesting to see a different picture of World War II from a Pacifist's eyes. The reader also gets a view of what it was like to live on the home front during the war. We get such rare glimpses of that; how people were thinking and what people were doing. These men in the internment camps were intellectuals such as painters, poets, and politicians. They remind me of the ex patriots of Paris during the 1920s such as Hemingway and James Joyce. There is a lot going on in this thin, little book!
