Origins: Our Place in Hubble's Universeby John Gribbin
Synopses & Reviews
Origins: Our Place in Hubble's Universe presents in stunning photographs events that previous generations of astronomers could only picture in their mind's eye - and which non-astronomers could not even imagine. In the 1990s new technology was applied to telescopes both on Earth and in space, and the result is here for all to see - from resonant views of supernovas and the center of ther Milky Way to the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Sun, and including an extraordinary image of the afterglow of the Big Bang, almost unimaginably far back and far away, just 200,000 years after time zero.
Book News Annotation:
Full-page color photographs from the Hubble Space Telescope and large terrestrial telescopes chronicle the prevailing theory of the origin and development of the universe by illustrating progressively closer, and so newer, celestial features. Also includes a long introduction, substantial captions on facing pages, and a glossary without pronunciation. A sequel to Goodwin's Hubble's Universe. Picture credits stand in for a bibliography.
