Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Most travel titles are put together in a few weeks by visiting travel writers. Wizard guidebooks take over a year to compile and the writers are residents who personally and anonymously review every facet of the island. Their maps are the best you'll find. From restaurants to helicopter companies to scuba to beaches to trails. They see it all and show you the best the island has to offer. They also reveal who's the worst and who to stay away from. All told in a frank, humorous way that keeps the reading fun.

This book became our "bible" while we were on the Big Island. Not only was the book full of useful information about all of the great things to do and see but it was also written with a terrific sense of humor. It was also refreshing to read actual recommendations about various businesses (i.e. scuba diving, restaurants, hotels, etc) and not feel like the reviewer was just trying to promote all businesses equally. It was full of such a range of things to do and see that no matter the fitness level or interest of the group, there were things to fit everyone. We used many of the businesses that came recommended and found that the reviews were quite accurate for each. We have since recommended this book to several other travelers going to the Big Island.

This book is the best I have found in one spot for information about adventuring on the Big Island. I have used it for hiking, snorkeling, and off-the-beaten path sight seeing.

It is accurate, informative, fun to read, detailed and well-organized. The sidebars and highlights such as the "A Real Gem" notations are helpful for skimming.

It has high-resolution pictures and is printed on glossy, heavy paper.

Some drawbacks are the whole book is heavy, not something to stick in a backpack. Also, the glued binding tends to let go quickly and soon large chunks of the book are loose. The writing tends to be a bit flashy, almost commercial, which doesn't really fit, but perhaps this is the author's sense of humor.

But beware, this series for the other Hawaiian islands is not nearly as accurate or informative.
