Cleaning up the afterlife – one spirit at a time!

R to L (Japanese Style). Cleaning up the afterlife – one spirit at a time!

Hot-tempered 15-year-old Ichigo Kurosaki, the hero of the popular fantasy-adventure Bleach, has the unsettling ability to see spirits who are unable to rest in peace. His sixth sense leads him to Rukia, a Soul Reaper who destroys Hollows (soul-devouring monsters) and ensures the deceased find repose with the Soul Society. When she's injured in battle, Rukia transfers her sword and much of her power to Ichigo, whose spiritual energy makes him a formidable substitute Soul Reaper. But the orange-haired teenager isn't sure he wants the job: too many risks and moral dilemmas.

The noose is tightening around Ichigo. His inner Hollow can't wait to consume him, the sinister transfer student has him tapped for a mysterious job, and now powerful new enemies have landed in his hometown to destroy him.

I am familiar with Bleach through Adult Swim, but still found myself kind of lost as I read this. I guess starting in the middle was not the smartest idea I've had, but I figured I'd give it a go before I returned my daughter's library book. I'll see if I can start at the beginning of the story, and work my way back to this volume. If not, then I know not to try starting from the middle. Definitely *not* a stand-alone.

Tite Kubo didn't start the manga off in a way that compelled me to keep reading. I truly became interested in the series after watching the anime version of Bleach, and then decided to continue reading. The series starts off in a way that doesn't keep you interested and comes across as plain, but as soon as the hallows arrive you will start to enjoy yourself. Even more important to the plot are the arrancars, Ulquiorra on the cover of volume 22, and the evil plot by a former ally of the soul society. Once this occured I grew attached to the characters and the series and have set out to buy every volume. I rated this series a 3/5 because it didn't grab my interest at first, and it took some dedication to start liking it. In my head, a 5/5 would have to be a series or a novel that got you hooked from the first page. Sadly, Bleach is not that, in my opinion.
