Chapman & Hall/CRC Computer Science & Data Analysis #7: R Graphics, Second Editionby Paul Murrell
Synopses & Reviews
Extensively updated to reflect the evolution of statistics and computing, the second edition of the bestselling R Graphics comes complete with new packages and new examples. Paul Murrell, widely known as the leading expert on R graphics, has developed an in-depth resource that helps both neophyte and seasoned users master the intricacies of R graphics.
New in the Second Edition
Organized into five parts, R Graphics covers both traditional and newer, R-specific graphics systems. The book reviews the graphics facilities of the R language and describes R 's powerful grid graphics system. It then covers the graphics engine, which represents a common set of fundamental graphics facilities, and provides a series of brief overviews of the major areas of application for R graphics and the major extensions of R graphics.
Book News Annotation:
Murrell (U. of Auckland, New Zealand) explains the graphics capabilities of the popular open source statistical software package, which can produce publication-quality diagrams and plots. The first part describes the traditional graphic system, on which most R graphics functions are based. A particular emphasis is on how to modify or add output to a plot to produce exactly the right final output. Then he turns to the grid graphics system, which is unique to R and much more powerful than the traditional system. He suggests criteria for deciding which system to use, but does not discuss which kind of graph to use for various kinds of data or various purposes. The second edition incorporates minor changes over the past six years, and adds a whole section just on the many new graphics extension packages. R users from beginners to veterans should find useful information here. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
