The official movie tie-in novelization of the highly anticipated sequel to 2009’s blockbuster feature film Star Trek!

Pioneering director J.J. Abrams has delivered an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Star Trek Into Darkness, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, and Peter Weller, arrives on May 17th, 2013.

This is a really strong novelization of a movie that's a stunning visual feast. Alan Dean Foster has a lot of experience in writing novels based on sci-fi movies and TV shows, including the animated Star Trek series, Alien and Aliens, and Star Wars (though he wasn't credited as George Lucas' ghostwriter), and it shows in his smooth writing.

My guess is that pretty much everyone reading this book will have seen the movie already, so I won't really go into the plot. (Anyway, it's really hard to say anything about the plot without giving away a key twist.)

What I liked about this book were (1) good tight writing not just about what happened but what viewpoint characters were thinking (which is one of the primary advantages that books have over movies); and (2) reasonably good attempts to explain some of the plot absurdities.

I'll close by saying that I watched the movie a couple of months ago, and I still read this quickly. That's the sign of a good novelization.
