A Solitary War: A Diplomat's Chronicle of the Iraq War and Its Lessons (Speaker's Corner)by Heraldo Munoz
Synopses & Reviews
Beginning with a “telling phone call from Condi,” the former president of the UN Security Council tells for the first time the behind-the-scenes story of the Iraq War, as seen from an international perspective, and explains why a multilateral approach to foreign policy is imperative in today’s world.
Book News Annotation:
As Chilean ambassador to the United Nations, Muñoz sat on the Security Council just prior to and immediately following the US invasion and occupation of Iraq, serving part of that time as the president of the Council. In this memoir, he describes the diplomatic wrangling surrounding the war. His central argument appears to be that when the US spurned multilateralism it created problems for itself and Iraq but that when it involved the UN, such as in setting the elections for the new Iraqi government, it was more successful.
