Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Looking for an escape from childhood abuse, Reymundo Sanchez turned away from school and baseball to drugs, alcohol, and then sex, and was left to fend for himself before age 14. The Latin Kings, one of the largest and most notorious street gangs in America, became his refuge and his world, but its violence cost him friends, freedom, self-respect, and nearly his life. This is a raw and powerful odyssey through the ranks of the new mafia, where the only people more dangerous than rival gangs are members of your own gang, who in one breath will say theyll die for you and in the next will order your assassination.

Book News Annotation:

I was a member of one of the gangs (CHI-WEST)that he writes about. He says that he shot at one of the CHI-WEST members and the CHI-WEST member threw his girlfriend in front of himself to keep from getting shot and that the the bullet did hit and kill her instead. That entire part of the story is fabricated within his (the wrighter)head and must be his way of embelishing his image of himself as an out of control youth or a youth gone bad. It's true that we did have quite a few fights with the Latin Kings, Spanish Lords, Dragons and many other Puerto Rican street gangs and many of us were injured and even killed over the decades but his account is totaly fabricated. This being said, I'm quite certain that a lot of what he states he did was a figment of his imagination to sell his idea as they supposedly happened in close proximity to our neighborhood and in the stret gang culture and grapevine, we would surely have heard of it. Not a single gang member gets severely hurt or killed with-out the different crews throughout the area hearing about it. Gang members don't get hospitalized or dissapear without their companions and even foes getting the word from one side or the other and in most instances, from both.
