Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A noted cultural historian and a respected indexer-bibliographer have tearned up to provide the first comprehensive and authoritative source on the production, worldview, and distribution of Spanish language periodicals, the most important document for studying the history, literature, and culture of Hispanies in the United States. This useful compendium includes 1,700 annotated entries, notes, and three indexes: by subject, by date, and by geography.

Book News Annotation:

Offers a detailed historical survey of Hispanic periodicals published in the US before 1960, reviewing exile, immigrant, and nativist publications, then lists some 1,700 records of periodical publications, of which only some 900 titles are accessible in one form or another. Encompasses serials published in the Spanish languages in the US, and serials published in the US, whether in English or bilingually, that were produced by or that served US Hispanic communities. Entries contain information on title, place of publication, publisher, and dates. The volume has three indexes: subject, geographic, and chronological. Kanellos teaches Hispanic literature at the University of Houston; Martell is with the Inter-American Defense College Library.
