Publisher Comments:

With this gloriously photographed and illustrated manual at hand, beaders can create awe-inspiring jewelry. It's the only current, comprehensive guide to working with cabochons--a flat piece of rock or mineral--and it covers all the basics, along with a range of new creative techniques and hot trends. Find out which tools and materials to use, which beads work best, and how to wrap them round the stones. Craft turned, pointed, twisted, brick stitch, ruffled, or scalloped edges, or add decorative fringe. For something dramatic, combine more than one cabochon in a single piece. Or, instead of natural stone, use dichroic glass or other found objects. Make a glittering brooch, funky bracelets, a wearable art necklace, and other showstoppers.

Synopsis:

Just about anything is fodder for Diane Hyde's eclectic, multilayered jewelry: found objects, quirky oddities, old images, and vintage materials. Beaders will love exploring her whimsical style and learning how they too can create beautiful pieces from seemingly ordinary, everyday things. Diane reveals her special, accessible techniques for working with these items, and presents 22 fanciful, fun projects, including a pendant with a wine cork affixed to a Pierrot doll head and embellished with bicone crystal beads; clever Light It Up Earrings, with mini lightbulbs haloed with floral-shaped beads; and figurines, necklaces, bracelets, and more!

About the Author

In addition to making jewelry, wearable art, dolls, and purses since the late 1970s, Diane Hyde has been beading for almost 20 years and teaching for a decade. She is celebrated for her signature aesthetic, based on the steampunk look with visual softness added by beads and beadweaving techniques. (Her fans call it beadpunk.) Diane's work has appeared in numerous magazine articles and books, and she has won awards in the world's preeminent beading competition, BeadandButton Magazine's Bead Dreams, every year since 2001. Diane's company, Designer's Findings, specializes in hard-to-find jewelry components. She lives in Waukesha, WI.

This is the very first beading book I ever bought. Using it I taught myself how to bead with cabochons, now I teach other people how to do it. I just love all the pictures with ideas, my students use it to decide what techniques to use on their pieces. I have created many beautiful designs using the techniques I learned in this book. The directions are clear, and well illustrated, easy to follow. You can mix and match lots of different techniques to create your own original work of art.

To call this a "how to" book does not do this work justice. Jamie Cloud Eakin starts with the basics, and via a mix and match approach teaches you how to combine different techniques to build your own masterpiece. The instructions are clear and well illustrated with drawings and pictures. Lots of pictures! I have used this book for inspiration countless times. A worthwile purchase for any beader who wants to learn what to do with those beautiful cabochons.
