About the Author

Robert and Hannah Litt have been keeping chickens for seven years. As Robert, a landscape architect, and Hannah, a nurse-midwife, became increasingly interested in urban foodgrowing, Robert returned to school to obtain an MS in sustainable agriculture. In early 2009, they opened an urban farm supply store. They've been featured on KATU News, Oregon Public Broadcasting, and Planet Green's Renovation Nation. As a customer of Robert and Hannah's store, I'd been anxiously awaiting their manual on caring for small backyard flocks. This book is much more than a manual. It's beautiful, for starters, featuring gorgeous illustrations by local artists and photographs from customers. The writing is personal and unpretentious. The authors draw from their own experiences raising chickens, but more importantly, they showcase the wide-ranging experiences of the community of chicken keepers that has formed around their unique store.

I was in the Urban Farm Store last year on the first day of near-freezing temperatures. The phone rang at least twelve times in the short time I was there, and each time, Robert listened patiently, then gave clear advice on how to prepare chickens for the cold. This book reminds me of that day. The authors have heard it all, yet manage to never come off as know-it-alls. I highly recommend it.

Reminds me of a "chicken for every pot". Don't know where that originated, maybe WWll era, but it's the first thing that came to mind. Looking forward to reading and gifting the book.
