Publisher Comments:

Ursula K. Le Guin, a student of the Tao Te Ching for more than fifty years, offers her own thoughtful rendering of the Taoist scripture. She has consulted the literal translations and worked with the scholar J. P. Seaton to develop a version that lets the ancient text speak in a fresh way to modern people, while remaining faithful to the original Chinese. This rendition reveals the Tao Te Chings immediate relevance and power, its depth and refreshing humor, illustrating better than ever before why it has been so loved for more than 2,500 years. Included are Le Guins own personal commentary and notes along with two audio CDs of the text read by the author, with original music composed and performed by Todd Barton.

Synopsis:

A student of the Tao for several decades, Le Guin has created an English text that will speak to modern readers in a fresh and lively way, while conveying the humor, insight, and beauty of the original.--"Shambhala Sun."

Of all the translations/interpretations of the Tao that I have explored, this one is my favorite. I love the inclusive language. I love her brief almost terse phrasing at times and yet her understanding of the message of Lao Tzu is shown in a well crafted interpretation and commentary. I reach for this book often, it was the translation from which I chose a text for my brother's eulogy - it will always have a special place in my heart and I look forward to this audio presentation as well. Walk gently, Karen D

UKL is a great practicer of the tao, which is evident in her books. Nothing is forced or out of place. She does by not doing. I loved her translation of this text because she seems to see straight through to the original meaning from three thousand years ago. It's a beautiful book and one that I could spend my whole life understanding. Seen anew through Ursula's eyes, it shines with a whole new light.
