Helping Children Find Themselves

Sandra McLeod Humphrey has a firm hold on the varieties of children's behavior patterns and in this excellent 'learning manual' she shares with both children and adults as well many instances where a child's self worth is threatened and follows each instance with some cogent questions to involve the reader in completing the concepts she has begun. Her method of 'teaching' is to provide little vignettes of the children who attending a typical school, here called Emerson Elementary. By making each idea take the form of a child in the named incident she makes it very easy to pass her concepts along a path of learning and acceptance.

Some of the concepts she covers in chapter + quiz format include social manipulation, ridicule, compassion, peer pressure, physical aggression, harassment, cyber-bullying, humiliation, exclusion, and even suicidal thoughts. Humphrey manages to convey her lessons in the language appropriate to the children and adds significant punch to her point by the wise choice of incorporating the fine drawings of Brian Strassburg to illustrate situations and reactions. The problems she raises (her subtitle of 'Facing Bullies, Peer Pressure, Popularity, and Put-Downs') are those encountered daily in our elementary schools. This little book would do well to be placed in the offices of all counselors, teachers, and yes - available to students and parents. Humphrey, with Strassburg's assistance, has created an invaluable manual for explaining behavior patterns and for learning to live life by The Golden Rule. This is a fun little book and a very wise one!
