Japan's most controversial anime series is over...but not the manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion! Series co-creator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's personal interpretation of the Evangelion characters and story is sure to intrigue new and old fans alike. In 2015, the "Angels" have returned, and Shinji Ikari, a fourteen year-old child of the new Earth, is forced by his father Gendo-commander of the secret organization NERV-to pilot the monstrous biomechanical weapon called "Evangelion" to match the Angels' fearsome power. As a carrier fleet steams towards Japan carrying a mysterious embryonic form linked to the true origins of the human race, a hurricane is about to blow down Shinji's momentary peace: the wind through the red hair of Asuka Langley Soryu, the new Eva pilot arriving in Tokyo-3...One of the founding members of Gainax, Japan's most progressive anime studio, Evangelion's Yoshiyuki Sadamoto was also the character designer for their recent Adult Swim smash FLCL. EVA Vol. 4 contains a Japanese sound FX glossary plus a special bonus interview with the voice of Asuka, Battle Royale's Yuko Miyamura!

I haven't purchased this product, but I have read this online, so I can say that it's a very crucial point in the Evangelion story. I'm a ginormous fan of NGE as a whole, and to be honest, this volume is the only thing that stands in my way of having the first six, which I consider to be my first step, the easy part, if you will, of having the whole series. I currently own the full anime, both Rebuild films, and Death+Rebirth for DVDs, and 1-3, 5, 6, and 12 for manga. So you can kind of assume that I know what I'm talking about when it comes to Eva.

Now, the story part of this: At this point, Asuka Langley Sohyru is introduced to us as the designated pilot of Evangelion Unit-02, the first "complete" Eva. In the anime she's very brash, and treats Shinji, our protagonist, like dirt (while harbouring a crush on him) but here in the manga, she's a lot less secretive about her feelings. She's more of the tsundere-type character where she's very sarcastic and snarky around other people but when it's just her and Shinji she lets just a tiny bit of her true feelings out. Like in the anime, the two must synchronise their lives to destroy the Sixth Angel. There's a side to the story that differs a lot from the anime in that Shinji and Asuka don't synchronise in Misato's apartment, rather they're in a hotel (I think) and live together in Misato's apartment from the start of volume 5 onward.

Overall, this was a great volume in the Evangelion story, and the manga continues to be superior to the anime I already love greatly. I can't wait to read this one for real while holding it in my hands.
