Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In the Arizona territory, every mountain hides a fortune—and every man fends for himself.

Tim Beckdolt is as American as the frontier itself, as rangy and self-reliant as a young Jimmy Stewart.  But after spending eight treacherous months digging $175,000 in gold out of Desperation Peak—all he has left is desperation. Two sadistic strangers have taken his gold, and now they want to take his life.  He’s on the run—the target of a Devil’s Manhunt.

In a time and a place where the only law is the law of survival, Beckdolt will have to live by his wits…or die by the bullet.

In 1932, Hubbard led a mining crew on a six-month West Indies Mineralogical Expedition in Puerto Rico—the first complete survey of the island since it had become an American territory.  It was an experience that informs this title with remarkable realism.

Also includes two additional Western tales:  Johnny, the Town Tamer, the story of a local swindler who meets his match, and Stranger in Town, in which a drifter confronts a corrupt sheriff…and his own dark past.

“Relentless.… The soundscape of both music and sound and the spot-on voices make the adventure real.” —Audiofilemagazine.com

Review:

"Tim Beckdolt becomes prey for a sadistic hunter, Bonnet, and his towering sidekick, Sven, who have stolen Beckdolt's hard-earned gold. They are armed with guns, while Beckdolt only has a knife and no food in the desert. But besides survival, Beckdolt wants his enemies to face the ultimate punishment. In addition to this feature title, the collection also includes two additional stories: 'Johnny the Town Tamer' and 'Stranger in Town,' each of which spin an ironic and action-packed tale of what happens when justice in one of its many forms comes to town. These stories have all the hallmarks of westerns, though feel a bit superficial. The overall sound is well produced with a full cast, sound effects, and musical score. However, the actors overperform their already caricatured characters so that, at times, it feels more parody than serious storytelling. A Galaxy hardcover. (Apr.)" Synopsis:

Striking gold, Tim Beckdolt is a man on the brink of a new life—until a killer forces him at gunpoint to mine it—jumping his claim. Tim manages to escape, but soon finds himself being pursued like an animal in a bloodthirsty manhunt through vicious terrain.

Synopsis:

Saddle up with this riveting tale. Young Tim Beckdolt had been working Desperation Peak in Arizona for eight long, treacherous months before striking a rich seam of gold.

Now, after three months of hard, grueling labor, he's stockpiled more than $175,000 of gold ore, and his dreams of wealth are about to be realized . . . that is until the loutish Swedish giant Sven and the foppish Virginian killer Bonnet, arrive to jump his claim. Forced by gunpoint to mine the remainder of the gold for this villainous pair, Tim manages to escape into the surrounding wilderness, only to be hunted like an animal through vicious terrain with no weapons to defend himself or food to sustain him.
