Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Game Design Foundations, Second Edition covers how to design the game from the important opening sentence, the a oeOne Pagera document, the Executive Summary and Game Proposal, the Character Document to the Game Design Document. The book describes game genres, where game ideas come from, game research, innovation in gaming, important gaming principles such as game mechanics, game balancing, AI, path finding and game tiers. The basics of programming, level designing, and film scriptwriting are explained by example. Each chapter has exercises to hone in on the newly learned designer skills that will display your work as a game designer and your knowledge in the game industry.

Book News Annotation:

In this book/CD-ROM for students and general readers, Pederson (game design, New York University) explains game design from concept to publishing, and provides exercises, assignments, and discussion questions. He gives information on salaries in the field, then looks at game genres and outlines the game design process. Subsequent chapters cover game research, game design and character design documents, and the roles of all of the members of the game design and game production teams. Game scriptwriting and basics of programming and level scripting are also covered. The book includes an example of a complete, b&w illustrated game design document, about 50 pages. An appendix lists web sites for conferences, jobs, and gaming schools and colleges, plus many web links to code, sound, and graphic tools. Another appendix provides an interview with the author detailing his career. The companion CD-ROM contains game demos, code for an example in the book, a demo film, and 1,200 game ideas.
