Publisher Comments:

Tired and broken by war, the men of the Brimlock Eleventh Imperial Guard are a force on the verge of collapse. Having been stretched across the galaxy by their loyalty to the Emperor, they are presented with one final battle that will allow them reward they all seek: to colonise the distant world of Vorr and live out the rest of their days in peace. All that stands in their way is a force of savages - a plague of feral orks that has spread across the planet. But can the Brimlock’s battered bodies and minds hold up to this greenskin invasion?

The Black Library returns us to the 41st Millenium and the grim future where there is only war with this tale of the Imperial Guard. The Brimlock 11th Regiment has reached the end of its life after two decades of warring in the Emperor's name. Consolidated from other decimated regiments, the Brimlock 11th is given one final mission to complete. It must secure an Imperial colony from an Ork invasion. Only then can the few surviving soldiers return home.

Richard Williams writes a very good Imperial Guard story with a wide variety of characters. The main characters are interesting and well-characterized; although some of the minor characters are less well-developed. Williams' storyline fits in well with the developed mythology of the Guard and the downbeat mythology and tenor of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The writing is sharp and the plotting well-paced. The book will be primarily of interest to fans of the setting. This is one of the better novels featuring the soldiers of the Imperial Guard.
